Why Elder Rule?
Because of its heritage of democratic values and its long history of congregational church government, modern American evangelicalism often views the concept of elder rule with suspicion.

Under the heading, "The Function of Elders" we read, ...

As spiritual overseers of the flock, elders are to determine church policy (Acts 15:22); oversee the church (Acts 20:28); ordain others (1 Tim. 4:4); rule, teach, and preach (1 Tim. 5:17; cf. 1 Thess. 5:12; 1 Tim. 3:2); exhort and refute (Titus 1:9); and act as shepherds, setting an example for all (1 Pet. 5:1-3).

I embolden the part, "ordain others (1 Tim. 4:4)" because, frankly, the passage in no way supports the idea that the role of an elder is to ordain others.

The passage from 1 Timothy 4:4 is correcting some very specific false teachings (the spiritual inertness of foods offered to idols):

4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,

I hold open the possibility I am simply not spiritual enough to make the connection between this verse and a commission from God for elders to ordain others - but it is more likely intended to be a reference to Titus 1:5?

I am just saying. It is good to read these things.

Good catch, Daniel.

Whether or not Titus 1:5 was the intended reference, I wouldn’t know. In any case, 1 Timothy 4:4 seems pretty obviously to be an error.

No way man, we're just not spiritual enough to get it! I am going to try fasting for a month, and depriving myself of sleep. When I find the connection, I will finally be more spiritual than you, with your "give up" attitude.

Humph!

When you get it, you can explain it to me. Then I'll be just as spiritual as you, without all the work.
