The problem most people have with the atonement is that they want to interpret what the atonement is, rather than translate it.

If you are a waiter, and you bring me my steak dinner, and sneeze on it as you serve it to me, so that my wrath is kindled - there are only a few ways in which my wrath may be overcome. Perhaps you give me a new steak, perhaps I call the manager and demand my money back, perhaps I get you fired. Whatever it takes, at the end of the day my wrath is appeased by something that was done to remove it.

Atonement means that my wrath has in some way been entirely appeased, such that if you brought me the new steak, my wrath would be satisfied by your substitutionary offer - or if I got you fired, my wrath would be satisfied by your punishment - but the key here is that that my wrath is no longer there - it was swallowed up by whatever was done to satisfy it. If you brought me the new steak, and my wrath was thereby satisfied - I could hardly call the manager to fire you. etc.

That is the thing - if you understand atonement, you understand that something has been done to satisfy God's wrath, as opposed to something being done which makes it possible for God's wrath to be appeased.
